About Dr. Poonam Lakhani
Recently, we partnered with Dr. Lakhani to offer clients the most comprehensive eye care possible and make shopping for glasses even more convenient than ever. Now, you can get both style and medical advice all in the same spot.
With several years of experience under her belt, Dr. Poonam Lakhani is well-known in the Mississauga area. She received her degree in optometry from one of the top Optometry universities; the University of Manchester, and upon returning to Canada, attended the optometry bridging program offered by the University of Waterloo to provide optometrists educated outside of North America with proper orientation to serve patients in the Canadian market. Having worked in the U.K. for a number of years Dr. Lakhani has treated a wide range of ocular disease, developing a passion for eye disease and management along the way.
For the time being, Dr. Lakhani will be working exclusively out of BonLook’s Mississauga location. She’ll be available to provide patients with comprehensive eye exams and contact lens fittings as well as eye exams for children aged three and up. Additionally, Dr. Lakhani co-manages with ophthalmologists in the area for other eye conditions.
Q&A with Dr. Lakhani
What’s a good way to practice proper eye care?
There are three things you can do: first, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Also, eat a diet rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, an ingredient found in leafy, green veggies like kale and spinach. Finally, our eyesight changes as we age and eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration become a greater risk, so I advise getting your eyes examined at least once a year to spot eye disease early on.
What’s the difference between an optician and an optometrist?
As your optometrist, I’m a health care provider and so I can administer eye exams, manage eye disease, and write prescriptions for your glasses. An optician is trained to interpret an optometrist’s prescription for eyeglasses and contact lenses. They can help you properly adjust the fit of your glasses according to your prescription.
